At Holt/Smithson Foundation we are honored that Virginia Dwan served on our Board of Directors from 2018 until her passing on September 4, 2022. Her wisdom, humor, curiosity, warmth, attention to detail, and vast expertise has contributed immensely to our young foundation. We will miss her a great deal.

Imagery and digitized film of Robert Smithson's earthwork Asphalt Rundown (1969) is currently on view in the exhibition Mining Photography: The Ecological Footprint of Image Production at Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. Mining Photography examines the relationship between photography and extractive industries. 

To kick-off our participation in the World Weather Network—a worldwide constellation of 28 arts agencies formed in response to the climate crisis—we will be looking at the changing conditions at Robert Smithson's earthwork Spiral Jetty since its completion in 1970.⁠

We are pleased to announce our first 2022 Holt/Smithson Foundation Research Fellowship awardee: Rory O'Dea.

In response to the global climate emergency, Holt/Smithson Foundation has joined twenty-seven arts organizations across the world to form the World Weather Network, a ground-breaking constellation of “weather stations” located across the world in oceans, deserts, mountains, farmland, rainforests, observatories, lighthouses, and cities.
