Visual Sound Zone (P.S.1)

Nancy Holt

P.S.1, New York
4 paper pages of typewritten text and audio recording
11 x 8 1/2 in. (27.9 x 21.6 cm)

This meticulously edited series of detailed observations describes the particulars of a “defunct washroom”, as Holt calls it. Intended to be played over a loudspeaker at the site of said washroom, this score is the remainder of an art exhibit. What was once a synchronous experience of sound and sight, past and present, language and phenomenology, is now an account of an absent subject. While Visual Sound Zone (P.S.1.) is site-specific in its original conception, these typed pages continue to hold a vision—even when the site cannot be seen.
